What is dry Eye Treatment?
Dry eye is when the eye surface is not protected well enough because there are fewer tears or the tears are of poor quality. It can cause stinging, burning, a gritty feeling, blurred vision and, paradoxically, watering. It is not a single disease but the common result of different causes: blinking less at screens, blocked oil glands at the lid margin (meibomian glands), age and menopause, contact lens wear, some medicines, laser eye surgery and immune diseases such as Sjögren's are common causes. Treatment is therefore planned step by step, according to the person and the cause. The first step is artificial tears, warm compresses and lid hygiene. If that is not enough, small plugs can be placed in the tear openings (punctal plugs) so tears stay on the eye longer, or prescription anti-inflammatory drops can be started. For oil gland problems, intense pulsed light (IPL) and heat-and-massage treatments are used; although studies showing that these reduce symptoms are increasing, long-term evidence is still limited. Dry eye is usually a condition that is kept under control rather than one that goes away completely.
