What is paediatric Physiotherapy?

Paediatric physiotherapy is treatment from infancy to adolescence for conditions affecting motor development, aimed at helping the child gain age-appropriate motor skills and become more independent. It is used most often in cerebral palsy (a permanent movement disorder due to brain damage before, during or soon after birth), developmental delays due to premature birth, congenital torticollis, injury to the arm nerves at birth (Erb's palsy), spina bifida and muscle diseases. Unlike adult rehabilitation, it works with a developing brain and body, and treatment is woven into play. The current approach is task-based, intensive, repetitive work focused on goals the child and family value in daily life (picking up a toy while sitting, walking to the classroom at school). The home programme the family carries out is at least as important as the sessions. Early diagnosis and early intervention are valuable for using the brain's flexibility, especially in the first two years.

How is paediatric Physiotherapy done?

  1. Assessment by a paediatrician, paediatric neurologist or physical medicine doctor
  2. Age-appropriate developmental tests and assessment of muscle tone, joint movement and posture
  3. Setting functional goals with the family
  4. Play-based, task-focused exercises; choosing devices such as splints, orthoses or walkers if needed
  5. Teaching the family the home programme and updating goals at regular intervals
