What is HPV Vaccine?

HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted virus, and some of its types are responsible for nearly all cervical cancers. The HPV vaccine builds immunity against these high-risk types and the types that cause genital warts. For the best protection the vaccine should be given before exposure to the virus, that is before sexual activity starts, which is why it is recommended in adolescence. It can also benefit adults up to certain ages. The number of doses depends on the age at which vaccination starts and the schedule used; ask a doctor about current practice and its place in the national vaccination schedule. Even after vaccination, women need to keep having regular cervical screening (smear and HPV tests).

How is HPV Vaccine done?

  1. Assessing age, health and the possibility of pregnancy
  2. Setting the vaccination schedule (number of doses and intervals)
  3. An injection into the arm muscle
  4. 15 minutes of observation
  5. Completing the remaining doses on schedule
