What is leech Therapy (Hirudotherapy)?
Hirudotherapy is applying leeches raised under sterile conditions for medical use to the skin. Leech saliva contains substances that temporarily stop blood clotting and widen blood vessels. Its best-known use in modern medicine is in plastic and reconstructive surgery: when venous return fails and blood pools in a reattached finger, ear or tissue flap, leeches help remove the excess blood. Studies have also been done in some painful conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, but the evidence is limited. In Turkey, leech therapy falls under the Regulation on Traditional and Complementary Medicine Practices; only certified doctors may apply it, using single-use leeches obtained from producers approved by the Ministry. A leech that has been used is never reused.
