What is hydrotherapy (Aquatic Therapy)?

Hydrotherapy (aquatic therapy) is a rehabilitation method used in special therapy pools usually kept at 33–36 °C. Because the buoyancy of water carries much of the body's weight, a person can do movements with less pain that they cannot do on land; water resistance strengthens the muscles, its pressure helps reduce swelling and control balance, and the warmth relaxes the muscles. The programme includes walking in the pool, range-of-movement and strengthening exercises, balance work and methods using floats (such as Halliwick and the ring method). Balneotherapy, which uses the mineral content of spa water, and hydromassage baths are different from hydrotherapy. In knee and hip osteoarthritis, pool exercise has been shown to give small to moderate short-term improvements in pain and function; it can also help in fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis and early rehabilitation after surgery. Evidence on balance and movement in neurological diseases is more limited. For long-term gains, supporting the pool programme with land exercise is recommended.

How is hydrotherapy (Aquatic Therapy) done?

  1. Doctor's examination and checking for conditions that prevent going into the pool
  2. Physiotherapist assessment of movement, balance and muscle strength
  3. Getting safely in and out of the pool and getting used to the water
  4. Warm-up, walking, strengthening, stretching and balance exercises
  5. Cool-down, a controlled exit and combining the programme with land exercises
