What is alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment?
Alcohol and drug addiction is a treatable disease affecting how the brain works, in which a person cannot control use despite knowing the harm, needs more and more, and has withdrawal symptoms on stopping. Treatment has several stages. In the first, detoxification, the aim is to clear the substance from the body and manage withdrawal symptoms safely with medication; especially with alcohol and some sedatives, withdrawal can cause seizures and be life-threatening, so stopping suddenly should be done under medical supervision. Treatment then continues with motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, relapse prevention training, family work and, when needed, medicines that reduce alcohol cravings or provide maintenance in opioid addiction. In Turkey, Ministry of Health and university hospitals have Alcohol and Substance Addiction Treatment Centres (AMATEM) for adults and Child and Adolescent Substance Addiction Treatment Centres (ÇEMATEM) for under-18s; you usually apply through the hospital's psychiatry or AMATEM clinic. Yeşilay counselling centres (YEDAM) offer psychosocial support. Addiction is a chronic disease; relapse does not mean treatment has failed but that the plan needs to be adjusted.
