What is orthognathic (Corrective Jaw) Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery corrects the position of the jaw bones rather than the teeth. It is used for skeletal problems such as a lower jaw that sits too far forward (prognathism) or too far back (retrognathia), an upper jaw that is set back, an open bite, marked facial asymmetry and showing too much gum when smiling. The cuts are usually made inside the mouth; the upper jaw, the lower jaw or both (bimaxillary surgery) are cut, moved to the planned position and fixed with titanium plates and screws. The operation is not done on its own: before it, a period of orthodontics lines the teeth up for the new jaw position, and after it orthodontic treatment is needed again for fine-tuning. The aim is to improve chewing, speech and breathing as well as facial balance. A genioplasty, which only moves the chin forward, is a more limited procedure and does not change how the teeth meet.
How is orthognathic (Corrective Jaw) Surgery done?
- A joint examination by the orthodontist and jaw surgeon with photos, cephalometric X-rays and CT
- Pre-surgical orthodontics to line up the teeth for the new jaw position
- 3D computer planning and preparation of surgical guides
- Cutting the jaw bones inside the mouth under general anaesthesia and fixing them in the new position with plates and screws
- Observation in hospital, followed by post-surgical orthodontics to finish the bite
