What is vaginal Birth?

Vaginal (normal) birth is when contractions of the womb open the cervix and the baby moves down the birth canal and is born. It is described in three stages. In the first stage, regular contractions that come more and more often open the cervix fully; in a first birth this stage can last hours, sometimes more than a day. In the second stage the mother pushes and the baby is born. In the third stage the placenta is delivered. Throughout labour the condition of mother and baby, the baby's heartbeat and the contractions are monitored. For pain relief, an epidural from the lower back, breathing techniques, moving around, a warm shower and massage can be used. If labour does not progress or the baby shows signs of distress, help with a vacuum or an emergency caesarean may be needed. An episiotomy (a cut at the opening of the birth canal) is not routine but done when needed. Some women who have had one caesarean and meet suitable conditions can try for a vaginal birth after caesarean in hospitals with the right facilities. Recovery after a vaginal birth is usually faster than after a caesarean, but which type of birth is suitable is decided with the doctor according to the condition of mother and baby.
