What is sedation Dentistry (Sleep Dentistry)?

Sedation dentistry is treatment in which, in addition to local anaesthesia, medicines are given to help the person relax or sleep. With light and moderate sedation the person relaxes, usually does not remember the procedure but can respond to questions; with deep sedation and general anaesthesia they are fully asleep and the airway is managed by an anaesthetist. It can be given by mouth, as a gas breathed through a nose mask, or through a vein. Under general anaesthesia, fillings, root canals and extractions on several teeth can be completed in one session. It should only be done in licensed centres with the right equipment and emergency facilities, together with an anaesthetist. Sedation does not remove dental fear on its own; where possible it should be combined with behaviour guidance and gradual desensitisation.

How is sedation Dentistry (Sleep Dentistry) done?

  1. Dental examination and planning all treatments for one session
  2. Pre-anaesthesia assessment: chronic illnesses, medicines and tests if needed
  3. Being told how long to fast before the procedure
  4. Dental treatment under sedation or general anaesthesia with monitoring of heart rhythm, oxygen and blood pressure
  5. Observation in a recovery room and discharge with a companion
