What is ganglion Cyst Treatment?

A ganglion cyst is the most common soft tissue lump in the hand and wrist. It is a benign sac arising from a joint capsule or tendon sheath and filled with thick, jelly-like fluid. It is most often on the back of the wrist, less often on the palm side of the wrist and at the base of the fingers. Its size can change over time, and it can shrink and disappear by itself. Most ganglia are painless and noticed only because of how they look; some cause pain with wrist movements or numbness by pressing on a nearby nerve. The diagnosis is usually made by examination; the cyst lighting up when a light is shone through it is a clue, and ultrasound is used when unsure. Treatment options are monitoring, draining the fluid with a needle (aspiration) and surgical removal. After aspiration, the cyst is likely to come back. In surgery, the cyst is removed together with the stalk connecting it to the joint, by an open or arthroscopic method; this lowers the risk of recurrence but does not remove it. The old method of bursting the cyst by hitting it with a book is not recommended.
