What is cardiac Rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is a multi-part programme designed so that a person who has had heart disease safely regains physical capacity and lowers the risk of another heart event. It is not just exercise: getting blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar to target, stopping smoking, heart-healthy eating, taking medicines regularly, weight control and dealing with the anxiety and depression that are common are also part of the programme. The exercise part is done within a safe heart rate range set by an exercise test, at first with ECG and blood pressure monitoring, under the supervision of the cardiology and physiotherapy team. Studies show that people who take part in rehabilitation after a heart attack or coronary disease are readmitted to hospital less and have a better quality of life; results on the effect on mortality vary between studies. The programme usually starts with a short period in hospital, continues as supervised outpatient sessions for a few months and then becomes a permanent routine that the person keeps up at home and in daily life.

How is cardiac Rehabilitation done?

  1. Cardiology assessment; echocardiography and an exercise test to set exercise capacity and the safe heart rate range
  2. A personal exercise prescription and risk factor targets
  3. Supervised treadmill, bike and light resistance exercise with ECG and blood pressure monitoring
  4. Education on nutrition, stopping smoking, medicines and stress management
  5. Reassessment at the end of the programme and an exercise plan to continue at home
