What is corn and Callus Treatment?

A callus is the skin thickening in response to constant friction and pressure. A broad, spread-out thickening is called a callus; a small one with a hard core in the middle that hurts when pressed is called a corn (clavus). Narrow and high-heeled shoes, toe deformities, hallux valgus (bunion) and walking problems are the most common causes. In treatment, the doctor thins the thickened skin layer by layer with sterile instruments, and creams that soften the skin and pads that spread pressure are recommended. Corns often come back if the cause is not removed; so choice of shoes, insoles and, if needed, treatment of the foot deformity are planned. People with diabetes should not cut their own corns.

How is corn and Callus Treatment done?

  1. Examination; distinguishing it from a wart and finding pressure points
  2. Thinning the thickened skin with a sterile instrument
  3. Recommending softening creams and protective pads
  4. Assessing shoes and insoles
  5. Orthopaedic assessment if needed
