What is meniscus Surgery (Arthroscopic Repair and Trimming)?

The menisci are two C-shaped cartilage cushions between the thigh bone and shin bone that spread the load and protect the knee. In young people, tears are usually traumatic, caused by the knee twisting while bent; after middle age, degenerative tears develop as the cartilage wears. Meniscus surgery is usually done arthroscopically, with a camera and fine instruments passed through a few small holes at the front of the knee. There are two main approaches: tears in the well-supplied outer rim and with a suitable shape are repaired with stitches; for tears that cannot be repaired, only the damaged part is trimmed and removed (partial meniscectomy). Preserving the meniscus matters for lowering the long-term risk of arthritis. For degenerative tears in middle-aged and older people, controlled studies have shown that arthroscopic trimming is not clearly better than physiotherapy and exercise for most patients, so surgery is usually not the first option in this group.

How is meniscus Surgery (Arthroscopic Repair and Trimming) done?

  1. Examination and MRI to assess the type and site of the tear and any ligament damage
  2. Spinal or general anaesthesia
  3. Inserting the arthroscope through small cuts at the front of the knee and examining the whole joint
  4. Repairing the tear with stitches, or trimming and removing the part that cannot be repaired
  5. Closing the small cuts, a bandage and, if needed, a knee brace or crutches
