What is lipoedema Treatment?
Lipoedema is a chronic fat tissue disorder with disproportionate, two-sided, symmetrical build-up of fat on the hips, thighs, legs and sometimes the arms. It occurs almost only in women and usually starts or worsens at hormonal stages such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause. Typically the hands and feet are spared, the tissue is painful and tender to touch, bruising is easy, and dieting does not reduce the build-up in the legs as much as expected. It is important to tell it apart from obesity and lymphoedema; in advanced stages lymphoedema may develop alongside it. Compression garments, exercise, manual lymphatic drainage and healthy weight management are the basis of treatment. In selected patients whose symptoms affect quality of life, liposuction using techniques that protect the lymph vessels can help reduce pain and volume.
