What is comprehensive Geriatric Assessment?

With ageing, having several chronic diseases and taking many medicines become more common; focusing on diseases one at a time can sometimes miss overall health. A comprehensive geriatric assessment uses standard tests to look at an older person’s medical condition, cognitive function (memory), mood, nutrition, hearing and sight, walking and balance, fall risk, incontinence, medicines and social support. Reducing unnecessary or interacting medicines, lowering fall risk and spotting dementia early are among its most important benefits. The result is a care plan tailored to the person and their family.

How is comprehensive Geriatric Assessment done?

  1. Detailed history and a list of all medicines (including herbal products)
  2. Physical examination and blood pressure measurement (sitting and standing)
  3. Tests of memory, depression, nutrition and fall risk
  4. Necessary blood tests and investigations
  5. Adjusting medicines and a personalised care plan
