What is adenoid Removal (Adenoidectomy)?

The adenoids are lymph tissue at the very back of the nasal cavity, on the upper wall of the throat. In young children they work as part of the immune system; in most children they start to shrink after age 7–8 and largely disappear by adolescence. In some children, however, they grow large enough to block the back of the nose or become inflamed often. This can lead to sleeping with the mouth open, snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, a constant runny nose, nasal speech and fluid in the middle ear because the Eustachian tube is blocked. In adenoidectomy, this tissue is removed through the mouth without any cut on the outside. If the tonsils are also large, tonsil removal can be done in the same session (adenotonsillectomy), and if there is persistent fluid in the ear, ventilation tubes can be placed in the eardrum at the same time. Not every large adenoid needs surgery; the decision depends on how severe and long-lasting the symptoms are and their effect on the child's sleep, hearing and development.

How is adenoid Removal (Adenoidectomy) done?

1. ENT examination; viewing the back of the nose with a thin camera or a side X-ray if needed
2. Hearing test and eardrum pressure test (tympanometry); sleep assessment if sleep symptoms are marked
3. Pre-anaesthesia assessment and questions about bleeding tendency
4. Reaching the adenoids with a mouth gag under general anaesthesia and removing the tissue with a curette, shaver or radiofrequency/cautery
5. Bleeding control, observation in the recovery room and usually discharge the same day or the next day
