What is sports Injury Rehabilitation?
Sports rehabilitation aims to prepare a person after a musculoskeletal injury in sport or daily life not just to walk without pain but for the loads their sport demands, such as jumping, sudden turning, sprinting and contact. ACL tears, meniscus injuries, ankle sprains, hamstring tears, shoulder dislocations and Achilles tendon problems are the most common conditions worked on. The programme progresses in stages, respecting the biological healing time of the tissue: first controlling swelling and pain, then range of movement, strength, balance and neuromuscular control, and finally sport-specific work. The decision to return to sport is made by the team not just on time elapsed but on criteria such as strength difference, hop tests and the person's confidence. Returning too early raises the risk of re-injury.
How is sports Injury Rehabilitation done?
- Doctor's examination and, if needed, MRI or ultrasound to grade the injury
- In the acute phase, controlling swelling and pain, protected loading and range-of-movement work
- Strength, balance and proprioception (joint position sense) exercises
- Gradual loading with running, jumping, changing direction and sport-specific drills
- Return-to-sport assessment with strength and hop tests, and an injury prevention programme
