What is radioactive Iodine Therapy?
Because the thyroid gland is the only organ that takes up iodine, radioactive iodine (I-131) taken by mouth builds up mostly in thyroid tissue and acts on it in a targeted way. In Turkey it is popularly known as “atom therapy”. It is used to reduce the gland’s activity when the thyroid is overactive, as in Graves’ disease and toxic nodular goitre, and in thyroid cancer to destroy remaining thyroid tissue and cancer cells after surgery. It is given in nuclear medicine departments; at high doses, staying in an isolation room for a few days may be needed. After treatment, radiation safety rules must be followed, such as avoiding close contact with young children and pregnant women for a set time. Afterwards the thyroid may become underactive, so lifelong thyroid hormone may be needed.
