What is cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an electronic device used for severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, when the snail-shaped cochlea in the inner ear has lost its function. A hearing aid makes sound louder; a cochlear implant turns sound into electrical signals and stimulates the hearing nerve directly. The device has two parts: an internal part with electrodes placed under the skin behind the ear in surgery, and an external speech processor worn behind the ear that picks up and processes sound. For babies born with severe hearing loss, implanting early is important to support language development, which is why newborn hearing screening is such a vital step. Good results can also be achieved in adults who lose their hearing after learning to speak. Results vary greatly between people; the duration of hearing loss, the condition of the hearing nerve and regular auditory rehabilitation after surgery are the main factors in success. A cochlear implant does not make sounds feel like natural hearing at first; it takes months for the brain to adjust to the new signals.

How is cochlear Implant done?

  1. Audiological tests, auditory brainstem testing and a hearing aid trial
  2. CT and MRI of the inner ear and hearing nerve; speech-language and psychosocial assessment
  3. Placing the internal part behind the ear and advancing the electrode into the cochlea under general anaesthesia
  4. Fitting and switching on the external processor a few weeks later
  5. Regular programming sessions and auditory-verbal rehabilitation
