What is allergy Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots and Drops)?

Allergen immunotherapy is the only treatment that targets the cause of allergic disease. The allergen identified by allergy tests and matching the symptoms is given to the body at regular intervals so the immune system becomes more tolerant of it. It is given as injections under the skin or as drops or tablets under the tongue, and is usually continued for 3–5 years for a lasting effect. In allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and selected allergic asthma it can reduce symptoms and the need for medicines; in bee venom allergy it clearly lowers the risk of a life-threatening reaction. Because injections under the skin can rarely cause a severe allergic reaction, they are given at health facilities able to handle emergencies, with observation afterwards.

How is allergy Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots and Drops) done?

  1. Identifying the allergen with history and skin prick tests or specific IgE in the blood
  2. Assessing suitability; getting asthma under control if present
  3. A build-up phase with increasing doses
  4. A maintenance phase at a steady dose (monthly, or daily under the tongue)
  5. Yearly review and completing the course of treatment
