What is epidural for Labour (Pain-Free Birth)?

"Pain-free birth" is the popular name for epidural analgesia, the most common method of reducing labour pain during a vaginal birth. With the mother sitting or lying on her side, the anaesthetist numbs the lower back and places a catheter as thin as a hair into the epidural space outside the spinal membranes with a special needle. Low-concentration local anaesthetic and pain-relief medicines are given through the catheter throughout labour. The aim is to reduce pain noticeably while the mother can still feel contractions and push; so the goal is easing pain, not complete numbness. Some centres use a combined spinal-epidural technique for faster effect. If needed, the dose through the same catheter can be increased to provide anaesthesia for an emergency caesarean. For an epidural to be possible, an anaesthetist must be available at all times at the place of birth. When and at what stage of labour an epidural is given is decided together by the obstetrician and the anaesthetist.
