What is skin Cyst Removal (Epidermoid Cyst)?

An epidermoid (epidermal) cyst, often called a "sebaceous cyst", is a sac that arises from the upper layer of the skin and is filled with cheesy, foul-smelling keratin. It is common on the face, neck, back, behind the ears and on the chest; most have a small black hole in the middle where the sac opens onto the skin. Similar cysts on the scalp that arise from the hair follicle are called trichilemmal (pilar) cysts. Unlike a lipoma, it is attached to the skin and its contents can come out when squeezed. Squeezing out the contents gives temporary relief, but as long as the sac remains the cyst fills again and the risk of inflammation rises. Lasting treatment is removing the sac without bursting it, or cleaning it out completely. Complete removal through an elliptical cut around the sac keeps the risk of recurrence lowest; for small cysts, minimal methods that pull the sac out through a smaller hole (punch) are also used. Red, swollen and painful inflamed cysts are drained first or allowed to settle; the sac is usually removed after the inflammation has passed.

How is skin Cyst Removal (Epidermoid Cyst) done?

  1. Examination to tell the cyst apart from a lipoma, an abscess or another skin tumour
  2. If the cyst is inflamed, draining it or waiting for the inflammation to settle
  3. Cleaning the area and local anaesthesia
  4. Removing the sac whole through an elliptical or punch cut
  5. Stitches, a dressing and sending the tissue for pathology if needed
