What is earlobe Repair (Torn Earlobe Surgery)?
Earlobe surgery corrects the shape of the soft lower part of the ear (the lobe). The most common reason is a piercing stretched over years by heavy earrings, or a lobe torn right through when an earring catches and is pulled. Large holes from gauges, lobes that have lengthened and thinned with age, differences present from birth and thick scars (keloids) at the piercing are also included. During repair, the edges of the tear or the widened hole are freshened by removing a thin strip and closed in layers; zigzag stitching techniques along the edge can be used to prevent a notch. In a lengthened lobe, extra tissue is removed to make it smaller. Filler or fat is an option to add volume to a thin lobe. If there is a keloid, it is removed and extra treatments such as steroid injections are planned to reduce recurrence; keloids have a high tendency to come back. Once healing is complete, the repaired ear can be pierced again away from the old scar.
How is earlobe Repair (Torn Earlobe Surgery) done?
- Examination of whether the tear is complete or partial, the size of the hole and any scar or keloid
- Cleaning the area and local anaesthesia
- Freshening the edges of the tear or hole, and removing any keloid
- Closing the front, back and inner layers with fine stitches
- Dressing and planning when stitches come out and when the ear can be re-pierced
