What is contact Lens Fitting?
Contact lenses are thin optical devices placed on the cornea. Soft lenses are the most common choice for short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and difficulty seeing close up (presbyopia). In corneal irregularities such as keratoconus, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) or scleral lenses can give much better vision than glasses. Choosing a lens requires an eye examination, measurement of corneal curvature and assessment of the tears; the wrong lens or mistakes in care can lead to serious corneal infections. Special lenses worn at night (orthokeratology) are also used to try to slow the progression of short-sightedness in children.
How is contact Lens Fitting done?
- Eye examination and measuring the prescription
- Corneal topography and assessment of the tears
- Checking fit with a trial lens
- Training in putting lenses in, taking them out and caring for them
- Check-ups in the first weeks and then regularly
