What is cartilage Repair and Cartilage Transplant?
Because joint cartilage has no blood vessels, its ability to repair itself is very limited. Local cartilage damage from sports injuries, kneecap dislocation or osteochondritis dissecans can cause pain, swelling and catching, and over time can progress to osteoarthritis. For small defects, tiny holes are made in the bone so that healing cells can reach the area (microfracture). For larger defects, bone-cartilage plugs taken from a non-weight-bearing part of the knee are placed in the damaged area (mosaicplasty), or the person’s own cartilage cells, multiplied in a laboratory, are transplanted. These methods are suitable for local damage; they do not work for widespread osteoarthritis. If there is knee misalignment or missing meniscus, it needs to be corrected at the same time.
How is cartilage Repair and Cartilage Transplant done?
- Finding the location and size of the damage with examination, X-ray and MRI
- Assessing accompanying misalignment, ligament and meniscus problems
- Choosing the method according to the size of the damage
- Arthroscopic or open surgery
- A long, step-by-step rehabilitation programme
