How do I get a second medical opinion in Turkey? When should I see another doctor?

A second opinion on major surgery, cancer or long-term treatment is a patient’s right. Which documents you need, how to ask, and online options.

Short answer

A second opinion is an independent assessment by another doctor of a diagnosis made or a treatment proposed by your doctor, and it is a patient’s right. It is especially recommended for major non-urgent surgery, serious diagnoses such as cancer, rare diseases and when treatment is not working. For a second opinion, bring previous examination notes, test and imaging results (including the images themselves) and pathology reports.

When should you get a second opinion?

  • A recommendation for major non-urgent surgery (e.g. herniated disc, knee replacement, hysterectomy)
  • A cancer diagnosis and treatment plan
  • Rare diseases or conditions without a clear diagnosis
  • Long-term medication or treatment with significant side effects
  • Complaints that do not improve despite treatment
  • When you feel you have not understood or are not convinced by what you were told

Documents to prepare

  • Discharge summary (epikriz) and examination notes
  • Test results (downloadable from e-Nabız, the national e-health portal)
  • Reports of MRI, CT and other imaging, and if possible the images themselves (CD or digital link)
  • Pathology report and, if needed, the pathology slides
  • A list of your medicines
  • A list of the questions you want to ask the doctor

Choosing a doctor for a second opinion

A second opinion is most useful from a doctor experienced in your condition, ideally at a centre independent of the first doctor. If your documents are ready, an initial assessment can sometimes be done by online consultation. If your reports are in Turkish and you want an opinion from a doctor abroad, you may need a certified translation.
