What is preconception Care (Pre-Pregnancy Check-Up)?

Preconception counselling means assessing a couple’s health before they start trying for a baby and reducing risks that could affect pregnancy in advance. Most of the baby’s organs form in the first weeks of pregnancy, often before the pregnancy is even noticed; for this reason, folic acid and adjustment of medicines should start before pregnancy. Good control of chronic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure and epilepsy lowers the risk of miscarriage and birth defects. Completing vaccines such as rubella and chickenpox before pregnancy, and knowing blood group and carrier status, are also part of planning.

How is preconception Care (Pre-Pregnancy Check-Up) done?

  1. Medical, gynaecological, pregnancy and family history
  2. Blood pressure, weight and general examination; gynaecological examination and smear test if needed
  3. Blood count, blood group, thyroid, blood sugar and some infection tests; carrier tests the doctor considers necessary
  4. Reviewing vaccination status and completing missing vaccines
  5. Starting folic acid and reviewing medicines being taken
