What is cardioversion?

Cardioversion is a procedure that returns an irregular or fast heart rhythm to normal (sinus) rhythm. In electrical cardioversion the patient is briefly sedated and an electric current timed with the heart’s electrical cycle (synchronised) is delivered through pads placed on the chest. Cardioversion with medicines (pharmacological) is also an option. It is most often used for atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. If the rhythm disorder has lasted more than 48 hours or its duration is unknown, because there may be a clot inside the heart, blood thinners must be taken for a few weeks beforehand or a clot ruled out with an echocardiogram through the gullet (TOE). After the procedure, medicines or ablation may be needed to keep the rhythm normal. A rhythm disorder with fainting, chest pain or low blood pressure is an emergency.

How is cardioversion done?

  1. Assessment with ECG and echocardiography
  2. If needed, blood thinners beforehand or ruling out a clot with TOE
  3. Hospital admission on an empty stomach and an IV line
  4. Brief sedation and a synchronised shock through pads on the chest
  5. Monitor observation and, in most cases, same-day discharge
