What is hydrocele Surgery?
Hydrocele surgery treats a collection of fluid that causes a painless swelling of the scrotum. In adults it is not a true hernia but fluid made by the membranes around the testis that is not reabsorbed. In adults, surgery is usually done through a small cut in the scrotum: the fluid is drained and the sac membrane is either partly removed or turned inside out and stitched behind the testis, so fluid does not collect again. In babies and children, a hydrocele is usually caused by a connection with the abdominal cavity staying open; because most disappear by themselves in the first 1–2 years, they are monitored first, and if they do not go away the connection is closed through the groin with a method similar to hernia repair. Before surgery it is important to show with ultrasound that there is no other cause behind the swelling, such as a testicular tumour, an infection or a true inguinal hernia.
How is hydrocele Surgery done?
- Examination and shining a light through the scrotum to show fluid
- Testicular ultrasound to assess the testis and possible other causes
- Spinal or general anaesthesia; general anaesthesia in children
- Draining the fluid through a cut in the scrotum (adults) or groin (children), and removing or turning back the sac membrane
- Bleeding control, a small drain if needed, a supportive dressing and cold packs
