What is entropion and Ectropion Surgery?
Entropion is when the edge of the eyelid turns inwards and the lashes rub against the eye surface; it causes constant scratching, redness and watering, and if untreated can lead to a corneal ulcer. Ectropion is when the lid sags outwards; it shows as the inner surface of the eye being exposed, drying, redness and tears running down the cheek. Both are seen most often in the lower lid as the lid's ligaments and muscles loosen with age. Less often, skin contraction from burns, scars or some eye diseases, facial palsy and causes present from birth play a part. This operation is different from cosmetic eyelid surgery: the aim is to restore the lid's function, that is protecting the eye and directing tears the right way. In age-related cases, shortening and tightening from the outer corner of the lid is used most often; for inward turning, stitches that turn the lid outwards are added. For outward turning due to scarring, a skin graft may be needed.
How is entropion and Ectropion Surgery done?
- Examination of lid looseness, lash contact with the eye and the corneal surface
- Finding the cause (age, scarring, facial palsy, from birth)
- Local anaesthesia, with sedation if needed
- Shortening and tightening the lid ligament, with turning stitches for entropion; a skin graft when needed
- Antibiotic ointment, a light pressure dressing and a stitch check
