What is pterygium Surgery?
A pterygium is a fleshy, triangular growth that usually spreads from the white of the eye on the nose side onto the clear cornea. It is more common in people with long exposure to sunlight, wind and dust. Small pterygia that cause no symptoms are usually just monitored. Surgery is recommended when the tissue advances towards the centre of the cornea, causes astigmatism and blurs vision, causes constant redness and irritation, or prevents contact lens wear. The main problem with surgery is recurrence; if the tissue is only cut away, it often grows back. Today, healthy conjunctiva taken from the upper part of the same eye (conjunctival autograft) is therefore placed where the tissue was removed, with tissue glue or fine stitches; in some cases amniotic membrane is used. Tissue that looks unusual is sent to pathology to rule out cancer.
How is pterygium Surgery done?
- Slit-lamp examination, measurement of corneal astigmatism and photo documentation
- Numbing drops or local anaesthesia around the eye
- Carefully separating the pterygium from the cornea and conjunctiva
- Placing a conjunctival graft from the upper part of the same eye with glue or stitches
- Eye patch and a check-up the next day
