What is lipoma Removal?

A lipoma is a benign lump made of mature fat cells and surrounded by a thin capsule. It is usually noticed as a soft, painless swelling under the skin of the back, shoulder, neck, arm or thigh that slides when pushed with a finger. Lipomas are not expected to turn into cancer, so small lipomas that cause no problems can be monitored. However, lumps that grow quickly, are larger than five centimetres, are firm, deep or painful should be distinguished with imaging and, if needed, a tissue sample even if they look like lipomas, because rarely a malignant tumour arising from fat tissue (liposarcoma) can look similar. During removal, a cut usually shorter than the lump's diameter is made over it and the lipoma is removed whole with its capsule; leaving the capsule raises the risk of it coming back. The removed tissue is sent to pathology. For large or multiple lipomas, some centres remove them through smaller cuts with a liposuction cannula; the scar is smaller with this method but the chance of recurrence is higher.

How is lipoma Removal done?

  1. Examination of the size, consistency and mobility of the lump
  2. Ultrasound if needed; MRI for deep or large lumps
  3. Local anaesthesia; sedation or general anaesthesia for very large or deep lipomas
  4. A cut along the skin lines and removal of the lipoma with its capsule
  5. Layered stitches, a pressure dressing and sending the tissue for pathology
