What is family Therapy?
Family therapy is a systemic approach that accepts a problem is fed not only by the person seen as "the patient" but also by relationship patterns within the family. Sessions are attended by parents, children and, when needed, grandparents and others who live at home or play a part in how the family works; some meetings may be held only with the parents or with one member. There are different schools, such as structural, strategic, systemic, multigenerational and emotion-focused family therapy; in all of them the aim is to strengthen communication, problem-solving skills and boundaries within the family rather than to look for someone to blame. Unlike couples therapy, it focuses on the whole family system, not only the partner relationship. Research supports family-based approaches for conduct problems and substance use in teenagers and for anorexia nervosa in adolescence; in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, psychoeducation for families can help reduce relapses. Evidence in many other areas is more limited, and the outcome depends on the family's participation.
